The Consulate General of Canada in Shanghai is seeking a qualified candidate for the following contract position
Part-Time Contractor, On-Site, Construction Technical Support
 
COMPETITION :   2011-ST-ADMIN-001

OPEN TO:
Canadian citizens, and dependants of Canadian-Based Staff at Canadian missions in China, who are legally able to work in Shanghai.

COMPENSATION:    RMB 250 per hour (salary is non-negotiable)
CONTRACT PERIOD : December 2011 through May 2012 (Part-Time)
CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS:    28 Nov 2011 at 17:00
All short listed applicants will be required to participate in written exams and/or interviews.  Successful candidates will be required to relocate to Shanghai at their own expense.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Under direction of the Construction Project Manager based in Canada, the contractor shall ensure and verify that the project is being implemented as per the design/build contract performed by local contractors and that Canadian Building Code standards are being adhered to in accordance with the contract.  Ensure that appropriate Health and Safety codes are being adhered to in accordance with the contract. Review all technical drawings and ensure work is suitable for acceptance. Review all Change Order submissions, and comment, recommend for acceptance.  Communicate regularly with Government of Canada Engineers, Architects on Technical issues, as and when required.  Assist with all project inspections and make recommendations on acceptance.  Other related technical duties.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:  Successful completion of Canadian Secondary School.  Technical College or University Education is an asset
LANGUAGE:   Fluent in English– reading, writing and speaking
       Knowledge of French and Mandarin is an asset

APTITUDE:   Ability to write technical progress and deficiency reports for architects and other experts in a cross-section of construction management professionals.
    Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian Building Codes as well as Canadian Occupational Health and Safety Standards.
ABILITIES:     - Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing on technical issues
- Ability to analyze construction drawings and specifications and compare to actual on-site work being done
- Ability to work independently and adapt quickly to procedural and technological changes
- Ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships with local construction team and supervisors
PERSONAL SUITABILITY
Professional integrity tact, dependability, judgement, initiative, adaptability, flexibility and effective performance under pressure; Capacity to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with clients, colleagues and supervisors.  The successful candidate must be prepared to work irregular hours as well as join conference calls with Canada outside of regular working hours.
